Nobel laureate George Smoot talks to middle school students- clever use of artificial intelligence to learn knowledge

On October 21, 2023, Nobel Prize-winning physicist George Smoot visited Hainan Huandao High School to engage with over 300 students and teachers. During this interactive session, he shared insights about personal growth and discussed his perspectives on cutting-edge technology.

Smoot, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006 for his work on cosmic microwave background radiation, emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence. “In the future, AI will undergo significant changes. It’s not just about improving AI; we also need to become good partners with it,” he remarked.

Reflecting on the relationship between technological advancement and economic development, Smoot stated that much of today’s world economy hinges on knowledge derived from early scientific research. He noted that as technology evolves, scientific discoveries have increasingly been translated into products that enhance daily life. He urged students to embrace a broader understanding of science and technology, suggesting that AI currently offers diverse knowledge avenues for learning. He underscored the importance of mastering ways to collaborate with and utilize AI in the future.

When recalling his own journey of growth, Smoot encouraged students to nurture their curiosity and think critically. He shared, “In my studies, I was always curious about how the world operates and what the underlying logic of different subjects is. Understanding the internal rules gives us a deeper awareness of the world around us and helps us grasp our courses better.”

Additionally, Smoot advised students to take advantage of opportunities for hands-on experiences while in school. “If something inspires you, don’t hesitate to explore it actively. Engaging physically with your interests not only enhances your learning but also deepens your understanding of the knowledge at hand.”

This event was part of the “Nobel Prize Campus Tour,” organized by the World Life Sciences Conference Committee.
