During a recent interview, Hans Kluge, the Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, provided insights into the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. He indicated that an estimated 1,000 women and children are expected to be evacuated to Europe soon for urgent medical care.
Kluge stated in an interview with Agence France-Presse that Israel, which is currently encircling the Gaza Strip, has “committed to carrying out a medical evacuation operation for over 1,000 people to the European Union (EU) in the coming months.”
He emphasized that the WHO, in collaboration with relevant European nations, will assist in facilitating these medical evacuations.
Rik Peeperkorn, WHO’s representative stationed in the Palestinian territories, mentioned in May that approximately 10,000 individuals need to be evacuated from the Gaza Strip for emergency medical attention.
As the Israeli military operations persist, reports from residents and healthcare workers in Jabalia, a northern Gaza refugee camp, reveal the ongoing bombardment of residential areas and the encirclement of schools and shelters designated for displaced individuals.
They also reported that the Israeli military has been detaining men and ordering women to leave the refugee camps.
Healthcare staff at the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza informed Reuters that Israeli forces stormed a school, detained men inside, and subsequently set the school ablaze. This fire affected the hospital’s generator, resulting in a power outage.
According to them, while Israeli forces remained outside the Indonesian Hospital, staff from Kamal Adwan Hospital nearby reported heavy gunfire near their facility during the night.
A nurse from the Indonesian Hospital, speaking anonymously, expressed concern, stating, “The military is burning several schools near the hospital; no one can enter or leave the hospital.”
