On October 20, 2023, in Nanning, China, audience member Yang Lianfang shared her thoughts after attending the Zhuang opera “Huang Wenxiu.” She expressed, “The emotional impact of the performance was incredible. The mountain songs in the play were beautiful, and the actors’ performances were vivid and engaging. I truly felt transported into Huang Wenxiu’s journey in poverty alleviation, and I was deeply moved by her spirit.”
The Zhuang opera “Huang Wenxiu” was showcased at the Guangxi National Theatre, featuring rich local customs and distinct regional characteristics that captivated the audience. The play is inspired by the real-life story of Huang Wenxiu, the former village secretary of Ban Ni village in Baise, Guangxi, who dedicated her life to poverty alleviation. This production has previously graced the stage of a New Year’s opera gala organized by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
By remaining true to the character’s original persona, the play employs dramatic and operatic techniques to intertwine several stories that highlight the political beliefs, spiritual aspirations, personal virtues, and commitment to the people of a young female party member dedicated to poverty alleviation.
Lead actor Ha Dan emphasized the connection between Zhuang opera and the everyday lives of the audience, stating, “The content performed resonates closely with the people. Zhuang opera incorporates a wealth of original mountain songs and dances, creating a beautiful effect that is loved by viewers.”
Young actor Peng Hao, known for his role as a middle school student named Ni Ni, explained his performance approach: “To better portray my character’s traits, I intentionally raised my speaking tone and made my movements more energetic, also emphasizing exaggerated facial expressions.”
Zhuang opera, also referred to as “Zhuangxi,” has developed from Zhuang folk literature, song, dance, and storytelling techniques. It is popular in regions where the Zhuang ethnic community resides, including Guangxi and Yunnan. In 2006, Zhuang opera was recognized as part of the first national intangible cultural heritage list.
