The first grassroots emergency rescue team skills competition in four cities including Chengdu and Meishan in Sichuan kicked off in Chengdu

On October 16, the Chengdu Emergency Management Bureau announced the launch of the first grassroots emergency rescue team skills competition in the Chengdu, Deyang, Meishan, and Ziyang areas, collectively referred to as “Chengde Meizhi.” Over three days, 12 grassroots emergency rescue teams and nearly 100 participants from these four cities will compete against each other.

The competition, guided by the Chengde Meizhi Emergency Coordination Special Cooperation Group and hosted by the Chengdu Emergency Management Bureau and the Chengdu Fire Rescue Detachment, aims to enhance the emergency rescue support system in these regions and improve the disaster response capabilities of grassroots teams.

During the event, teams from Chengdu drew random disaster type cards to report information based on the specified scenarios. Meanwhile, participants from Deyang swiftly connected and activated emergency lighting equipment while assembling cutting tools. In another demonstration, team members from Meishan and Ziyang, dressed in firefighting gear and wearing oxygen masks, broke through a door and quickly laid down hoses to target a simulated fire source, successfully completing their tasks through teamwork.

The competition features four individual events and one team event. The individual categories assess skills in firefighting and rescue, earthquake response, flood rescue, and medical assistance, with two members from each team participating in each individual skill. The team event, focused on confined space rescue, requires eight firefighters and emergency responders from various localities to work in close coordination.

In recent years, the four cities have collaborated to establish an emergency coordination group to advance the emergency response system. They have implemented four key actions: regional collaboration, risk prevention, early warning measures, and enhancing emergency response capabilities. Starting in 2024, the Chengdu, Deyang, Meishan, and Ziyang emergency rescue teams will hold this skills competition annually to elevate their skillsets and foster stronger communication and cooperation among the teams.

Looking ahead, Chengdu aims to promote regional risk prevention, coordinated dispatch of emergency resources, joint training for rescue teams, and collective stockpiling of disaster relief supplies. These efforts will enhance the city’s resilience against natural disasters and improve safety across the Chengdu metropolitan area.
