On October 25th, the first batch of “Special Approval” exhibits for the 7th China International Import Expo successfully cleared customs at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. This initial collection includes approximately 800 kilograms of avocados from Australia, which have yet to receive quarantine approval for entry into China. Thanks to the “Special Approval” policy associated with the expo, these avocados are now able to enter the market and represent a significant opportunity for Australian exporters.
The General Administration of Customs of China introduced the “Special Approval” policy last year to support the continued success of the expo. This initiative allows for the importation of animal and plant products from countries and regions without existing quarantine approvals, provided that risk assessments confirm that it is manageable.
John Thias, CEO of the Australian Avocado Association, expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of Australian avocado farmers and exporters attending the expo in Shanghai. He highlighted their eagerness to showcase high-quality fresh avocados to Chinese consumers.
The “Special Approval” policy addresses the challenges faced by unapproved animal and plant products in participating in the expo, thereby enriching the diversity of exhibits. Since the implementation of this policy at the last expo, a total of 45 batches of various foods and agricultural products, including pineapples from Benin, pomegranates from Afghanistan, tuna from Malta, and beef from Nicaragua, have taken advantage of this opportunity to be featured at the event.
