In a recent conversation, actress Saoirse Ronan discussed the importance of shooting her latest World War II film, “Blitz,” against the backdrop of ongoing global conflicts. Directed by Sir Steve McQueen, the movie was primarily filmed in early 2023, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Ronan described the filming experience as “incredibly relevant.” She explained, “There were scenes filled with total chaos and pandemonium, portraying characters immersed in fear and horror. Then, you’d leave set, turn on the radio, and hear that same chaos, or switch on the news and see it reflected there.”
She added, “It was the first time I truly felt that there was no escaping the reality we were depicting in the film. While it might seem insensitive to say I was grateful for that, it fueled my motivation to continue with the project and reinforced its significance.”
The film had its premiere at the London Film Festival, where Ronan walked the red carpet alongside co-stars Stephen Graham, Paul Weller, and Benjamin Clementine.
Stephen Graham, who attended the event with his wife Hannah Walters, pointed out that the film offers a fresh perspective on World War II, particularly through the eyes of a mixed-race child. Elliott Heffernan plays George, a nine-year-old boy navigating the chaos of the Blitz. When asked about the film’s unique viewpoint, Graham noted that while many classic war films reflect a nostalgic lens, “this vision that Steve brought to the screen is unique.”
Sir Steve, renowned for hits like “Widows” and “12 Years A Slave,” expressed his commitment to premiere “Blitz” in London, stating, “I’m a Londoner and I wanted this story to debut where it belongs – in its home city.” He elaborated on the film’s focus on a working-class family during the war, emphasizing its blend of personal and historical narratives.
In “Blitz,” Ronan plays Rita, a mother caught between her responsibilities and the dangers of war—a relatable struggle for women of that era. “These women, like Rita, found themselves in positions of power they weren’t accustomed to, managing homes and families while their partners fought,” she reflected.
The film is set to be released in cinemas on November 1, followed by streaming on Apple TV+ later that month. As award season approaches, Ronan is aiming for recognition as she campaigns for both best supporting actress for “Blitz” and best leading actress for her upcoming film, “The Outrun.”
