Putin allies with Iranian president in hopes of coordinating with US

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Turkmenistan on October 11 for about an hour of discussions. Putin emphasized that relations with Iran are among Russia’s top priorities, a point that has raised concerns in the United States about this growing partnership. According to reports from Israeli media, a source indicated that the Israeli security cabinet did not reach any significant decisions on how to retaliate against Iran after discussions on the night of October 10, noting that Israel seeks coordination with the U.S.

Reuters reported that Putin stated the perspectives of Russia and Iran on global issues are often very aligned. He has formally invited Raisi to visit Russia. Raisi also expressed his hope to sign a strategic partnership agreement between Iran and Russia during the BRICS summit scheduled in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24.

In remarks to Putin, Raisi noted, “Our communication in economic and cultural spheres is increasingly strengthened and becoming more robust.” He added that both countries agreed to expedite projects related to the gas industry, infrastructure development, and desalination, along with other initiatives in energy, petrochemicals, and electricity.

Meanwhile, the U.S. government expanded its sanctions on Iran’s oil and petrochemical industries on October 11. This includes targeting Iran’s so-called “ghost fleets” that transport oil worldwide as a response to Iran’s missile attacks on Israel.

U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that these measures are designed to prevent Iran from further securing funds to support its missile programs and to assist terrorist organizations that threaten the U.S., its allies, and partners.

In retaliation for Israeli attacks on Lebanon and Gaza, as well as the killing of Hamas leader, Iran launched a missile attack against Israel on October 1, with Israel vowing to respond.

U.S. President Joe Biden has indicated that Israel should seek alternatives to attacking Iranian oil fields. Three sources from the Gulf revealed that Gulf states are lobbying Washington to prevent Israel from targeting oil facilities, expressing concerns that escalation could lead to attacks on their infrastructure by Iranian proxies.
