“China and Japan are not just neighbors geographically, but also share deep cultural ties. For us as overseas Chinese, it’s crucial to unite our hearts, strengths, and wisdom. We must act as a bridge to enhance exchanges between China and Japan, serving as ambassadors of friendship and helping to cultivate a positive international image for our country,” stated Lin Xiujun, director of the Japan-China Economic and Cultural Exchange Association, during an interview with China News Service on September 11.
On the evening of September 10, in anticipation of the Mid-Autumn Festival, a gathering titled “West Lake Mid-Autumn Moon, Together at This Time” took place at West Lake University in Hangzhou. This event was organized by the Hangzhou Overseas Chinese Federation, the Hangzhou Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, and West Lake University, bringing together over 700 representatives from overseas Chinese associations across 25 countries and regions, as well as local community members. Participants enjoyed the stunning scenery of the “West Lake Mid-Autumn Moon” while sharing their sentiments of homesickness and nostalgia.
“The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important celebrations for the Chinese people, rich in cultural significance and national pride,” commented Zhuang Liping, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Chairperson of the Zhejiang Overseas Chinese Federation. She expressed her hope that overseas Chinese would utilize their unique perspectives to connect China with the world, broaden their global outlook, innovate their approaches, and engage more actively in national strategies. This would facilitate friendly exchanges with other countries and help tell compelling stories about China, Zhejiang, and Hangzhou.
The evening featured a captivating performance that blended contemporary pop and traditional elements of “Liang Zhu,” showcasing the versatility of traditional Chinese culture within modern music. The combination of traditional instruments with keyboards and percussion resonated with the audience, who responded with enthusiastic applause. The night concluded with a moving rendition of “Me and My Country.”
Traditionally, the Mid-Autumn Festival has been a time for moon worship, celebrating the harvest, and reuniting with family—symbolizing a profound sense of familial and national sentiment among the Chinese. This sentiment is echoed within overseas Chinese communities globally, which continue to maintain a strong connection to the festival, even as times change. Representatives from countries like the United States, Spain, and France shared their heartfelt messages for their homeland through virtual platforms, embodying the spirit of unity and collaboration within the overseas Chinese community.
“The collaboration between the suona, pipa, keyboards, and drums was truly impressive. The blend of modern and traditional Chinese music was refreshing, and classic pieces like ‘May We All Be Together for Eternity’ and ‘The Moon Represents My Heart’ transported us into a beautiful emotional realm,” remarked Wu Beibei, Vice Chairperson of the Spain Overseas Chinese Association. She expressed her hopes for greater incorporation of Chinese cultural elements in the future, allowing overseas Chinese to better appreciate the allure of traditional heritage.
