An international seminar titled “Global Governance and China-Brazil Cooperation” was held in Rio de Janeiro on October 14, as part of the G20 Think Tank Forum. Over a hundred experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs from China and Brazil engaged in discussions on topics such as “Multilateralism and Global Governance,” “Sustainable Development and Innovation,” and “Future China-Brazil Cooperation.”
In his opening remarks, Gao Xiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil. He emphasized that the China-Brazil relationship has established a new model of strategic mutual trust among emerging economies. The cooperation between the two countries has expanded new space for collective development and injected new momentum into the enhancement of global governance. With the G20 Leaders’ Summit set to take place in November in Rio, Gao expressed optimism that the think tanks from both countries would leverage their research strengths to provide valuable recommendations and promote a focus on cooperative development for the G20, contributing to the recovery and growth of the global economy and sustainable development.
Aloizio Mercadante, President of the Brazilian National Bank for Economic and Social Development, highlighted the complexities and fluctuations of today’s global geopolitical landscape. He pointed out the challenges posed by unilateralism and protectionism to global trade, stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation among countries in the Global South. He praised China’s open and win-win policy as a vital force for peace and development worldwide.
Esther Dweck, Brazil’s Minister of Public Service Management and Innovation, underscored the need for enhanced dialogue between the two nations. She advocated for exploring new areas of common development in sectors such as renewable energy, digital empowerment, and environmental protection. Dweck expressed Brazil’s eagerness to learn from China’s experience in poverty alleviation, aiming for more inclusive development outcomes.
In conjunction with the seminar, a special book exhibition on “Global Governance and China-Brazil Academic Exchange” took place. The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences presented a collection of books on Chinese philosophy and social sciences to the Brazilian Center for International Relations and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
