On October 9, in Beijing, Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian addressed a query regarding the recent approval of U.S. military aid to Taiwan. He urged the U.S. to reassess its contradictory stance towards China and reconsider its dual approach concerning Taiwan, stressing the need to halt military support to prevent further damage to U.S.-China military relations.
When a reporter inquired about the U.S. government’s decision to provide approximately $567 million in military assistance to Taiwan for training, anti-armor initiatives, and drone projects, Wu had a pointed response. He criticized the U.S. for dismissing China’s strong objections and persisting in its military support for Taiwan. He characterized this action as a severe violation of the One China principle and the three joint communiqués between the U.S. and China, which he claimed poses significant threats to China’s sovereignty and security, while also undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Wu strongly condemned the U.S. actions and expressed a firm protest.
Additionally, Wu elaborated on how the U.S. has repeatedly undermined its commitments by supplying military aid and arms to Taiwan, sending perilous signals to pro-independence factions there. He argued that such measures exacerbate regional tensions and bring Taiwan closer to conflict, asserting that arming Taiwan only reinforces movements for “Taiwan independence,” which he equated with inevitable war. Wu predicted that the strategy of “using Taiwan to contain China” would ultimately backfire.
He reiterated the Chinese government’s demand for the U.S. to abandon its contradictory position and cease military support for Taiwan to avert further disruptions in bilateral and military relations. Wu concluded by affirming that the People’s Liberation Army would continue to enhance training and combat readiness, strengthen its capabilities, and resolutely counter “Taiwan independence” activities as well as foreign interference, in the unwavering pursuit of safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
