Los Angeles Department of Transportation pilots system to detect concealed weapons

The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) recently launched a scanning pilot system at Union Station aimed at detecting concealed weapons among passengers to prevent violent incidents.

Metro showcased this new technology to the public, which can monitor foot traffic at the B/D line entrances of Union Station and identify passengers who may be secretly carrying weapons. If a potential threat is detected, Metro security or law enforcement personnel will conduct further screening. Metro officials mentioned that the pilot program is expected to conclude by the end of December, after which they will evaluate the possibility of expanding the system to other stations. They emphasized that the system provides an “effective, non-invasive screening method” for monitoring hidden threats.

Robert Gummer, Metro’s Deputy Chief of Security and Law Enforcement, pointed out that “the number of arrests made for carrying weapons on public transit has doubled since last year.” He emphasized, “We take this issue seriously, and we believe that trying out these technologies is a crucial first step toward enhancing system safety.” So far this year, Metro has arrested 152 individuals for weapons offenses.

The pilot program will test three different detection systems, with each system undergoing trials for several weeks. The Metro Board has also called for the adoption of such technological measures. In September, Metro began installing weapon recognition software on its surveillance systems to detect visible firearms. Gummer also revealed that Metro is testing millimeter-wave monitoring technology, similar to the security screenings at airports and government building entrances. This technology uses electromagnetic waves to detect weapons that might be hidden beneath clothing.

The urgency for improved security measures at Metro has become increasingly clear, especially following a recent incident in September where a bus was hijacked, resulting in the death of a passenger. With a rise in violent incidents on public transportation, Metro is facing pressure from residents, passengers, and elected officials to enhance public safety.
