In a recent interview, we delved into China’s ambitious global initiatives aimed at creating a community with a shared future for humanity. In the face of unprecedented global changes and challenges, it’s become evident that unilateral actions are no longer sufficient; instead, collaborative responses from countries around the world are crucial.
Over the past 75 years, China has anchored its diplomatic efforts in the principles of global welfare and unity. With the onset of a new era, China has adopted the idea of shared governance, providing innovative solutions to reforming the existing global governance system. This approach seeks to address challenges collectively and to envision a brighter, more cooperative future.
We reflected on a significant moment from March 2013 when President Xi Jinping delivered a landmark speech at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, where he first introduced the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind. Professor Alexey Alekseen, who translated the address, described it as both inspiring and transformative for his students’ understanding of international dynamics. “That speech had a profound impact on me,” he recalled, underscoring its enduring influence on the discourse surrounding peace and development.
China’s resolve to confront global challenges is steadfast. The nation continues to advocate for the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence while promoting a multipolar world and the democratization of international relations. Through these efforts, China contributes fresh ideas aimed at enhancing global governance.
A striking example of this spirit of collaboration emerged last July at the second high-level Global Development Action Forum in Beijing. During an unprecedented e-commerce event, representatives from countries including Cape Verde, Pakistan, and Thailand showcased their local products and cultural initiatives through a 12-hour live stream that captivated over 33 million viewers.
Cape Verde’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Vieira, expressed admiration for the collective determination among the participating nations to tackle challenges together, highlighting the importance of the Global Development Initiative in fostering international cooperation.
In this new era, China’s initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative are gaining momentum, aligning countries around shared objectives and facilitating collaborative platforms. These initiatives have already yielded significant outcomes, with over 1,100 projects launched under the Global Development Initiative framework and cooperative agreements signed with more than 150 countries.
Former French Prime Minister Raffarin stated, “In a world where global governance is challenged by obstacles and imbalances, China’s proposals for innovative ideas and initiatives are timely. Increased cooperation can help ease tensions.”
On September 23, the two-day United Nations Future Summit concluded with the adoption of the “Future Covenant,” aimed at reforming the international governance system and revitalizing multilateralism in addressing global challenges.
As a founding member of the United Nations and a permanent member of the Security Council, China remains a staunch advocate for multilateralism. Its participation in numerous international organizations and commitment to over 600 international treaties solidifies its role as a pillar of support within the UN framework.
Former Zambian Foreign Minister Vernon Mwaanga noted the historic decision to restore the People’s Republic of China’s legitimate seat at the UN, emphasizing its significant contributions to the global stage.
In 2015, President Xi announced the establishment of the China-UN Peace and Development Fund, which has supported over 130 projects across more than 100 countries, demonstrating China’s commitment to UN initiatives through tangible actions.
During the crucial climate governance discussions at the UN climate conference in Dubai last year, China was pivotal in facilitating negotiations and offering solutions, further showcasing its leadership in promoting dialogue and collaboration.
As UN Secretary-General António Guterres remarked, “China is a critical pillar of multilateralism and plays an essential role in shaping a more peaceful international order.”
Focusing on the Global South, China continues to address the challenges faced by developing nations. For instance, a project initiated in Uganda aimed at enhancing sustainable soil management underscores China’s commitment to improving agricultural practices and supporting local farmers.
As an influential member of the Global South, China is dedicated to amplifying the voices of these countries within the global governance framework. Recent initiatives that support the Global Development Initiative and efforts to uphold human rights highlight China’s leadership in these areas.
As the international order undergoes historic changes, the Global South is becoming a key player. China is determined to highlight the “Southern Moment” in global governance with initiatives like the upcoming Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and continuous support for BRICS cooperation.
